Ass Jigsaw

Film Review: Saw III
SPOILER WARMING – If you have not seen the film SAW III you may wish to skip this review.
Some people hate when reviewers give the details of a film away to an audience but it is my opinion that if you are reading a review then you’re already prepared to learn things about a film that you didn’t already know. If you don’t want to know the twists and turns and reversals then don’t read the review; get off your lazy ass and go watch the film otherwise shut up and read.
SAW III is the answer to the question “Can a sequel equal or be better than the original?” The answer I’m glad to say is “Yes.” SAW II went a long way in establishing the world that was created in the original film but like most independent low budget films the original film was limited to locations, characters, special FX, etc. It relied more on mood and tension to deliver the scares, which is not an easy feat nor does it take away from the film. The second film upped the kill ratio and the gore while still maintaining a sense of being a great horror film, but while it was trying to set up the twist ending with Amanda (Shawnee Smith) being Jigsaw’s (Tobin Bell) accomplice it failed to really develop any of the other characters as strongly as the first film. All that has been rectified in the new film.
James Wan and Leigh Whannell have returned to the writer’s fold to craft an even better film than the previous two films combined, which is exactly what they did. The two crafted a story that mixed the narrative of the previous films as well as mantained the character mythos established in that film with the extreme gore and violence of the second film and married the best of both worlds, so, what viewers are subjected to is a tour de force of extreme violence with the cutting edge drama and character developemnt not seen in horror films since THE EXORCIST.
One of the things that make the Saw films so enjoyable is the fact that they are relentless and are never predictable and always pushing the envelope which all good horror films should do. It also doesn’t play down to the lowest common denominator but instead rewards the audience with twists and turns at every corner.
In an arena where the Saw films are being cranked out one a year (SAW IV will be out this October) this I’m afraid may not be for long. I fear that there may be a “compromised” way of continuing the series in the face of impossible explanations (i.e. Michael Myers resurrection in HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION after being decapitated in HALLOWEEN:H20), which will dumb the series down.
