Physics behind bungee jumping?
First- which person feels the heaviest at the bottom of a fall: a heavy or light person? Why?
Second- If the jumper used two bungee cords instead of one—perhaps one attached to each ankle—how would that affect the time it takes to complete each bounce up and down?
1. the heavy person will accumulate much more kinetic energy during the fall, and so stretch the cord much farther than the light person. That ‘more-stretched’ cord will exert more force on the straps, and so the heavier person will feel more pressure that way – which is the only way he/she can tell about weight.
2. A double cord would be like a stiffer cord, so the jumper would not stretch the cord as much, and so have a shorter stretch, and so a briefer bounce cycle.
