Drill Bits Metal
Would I be able to easily drill multiple holes into a 3/8 inch thick rectangular piece of metal?
I need to drill about 100 holes, that are 1/4th inch thick into a piece of metal. I don’t have experience drilling into metals, and am scared that the drill bits would break.
Previously I had drilled into mahogony , but it wasn’t strong enough to support the tension created by the pull on the nails that i had put into it.
Could you reccomend a type of metal, and how easy/tips on drilling into it?

Drilling a 1/4 inch hole in 3/8 inch aluminum should be fairly straightforward. Here are a couple tips:
1. Safety first! Make sure the stock is clamped or otherwise securely held. Aluminum is notorious for “grabbing” the drill bit.
2. Use kerosene for a cutting fluid. This will lubricate the cut and help cool the drill bit.
3. Run your drill at a medium speed.
If you’re having trouble with “grabbing”, it’s because drill bits for aluminum should be ground at a flatter angle with a flatter “rake” angle on the cutting edge. Also the face of the cutting edge should be polished, as the aluminum tends to “gall” on to the drill, thus hampering the shearing action of the edge. If this is a problem, go online and buy a bit that is made for aluminum, or go to a friend or machine shop and have them alter a regular bit. I’ve done this many times.
