Gas Oil Fluid
My boat motor starts with the help of starting fluid but won’t stay running?
Kind of a tough question without all the details but I have a approximately 1978 sea star with a chrysler 165 4 cylinder in out board when starting I put some starter in it and push the throttle all the way forward I can get get it to fire just revs high and then immediately shuts off if I want to start again I have to put more starting fluid. Changed plugs oil fresh gas and still same result anyone have any answers. Muchly appreciated
It definately sounds like you’re not getting fuel to the engine. If I’m understanding your question correctly, this is an inboard / outboard engine???????
The first thing to do is check your fuel pump. If you have experience messing with engines, you may feel safe doing this without disabling the engine first. If not, disable the engine by removing the small wire to the + side of the ignition coil and wrapping it with black tape. Then crack the gas line loose at the carburator and crank the engine. If it leaks gas the fuel pump is good. If it doesn’t the fuel pump may be bad or there may not be gas getting to the fuel pump. Remove the gas line from the fuel pump that comes from the tank. If it has gas flowing thru it, the pump is bad. If it doesn’t have gas flowing thru it, blow some compressed air into the gas tank thru the fill cap. Do this by covering the fill hole with your hand and put an air hose between your thumb and index finger. You don’t want a real tight seal on the filler tube. Just enough to push gas thru the gas line. After you get flow thru the gas line, reconnect it and try checking the pump again.
Also if you have a fuel seperator filter, make sure it’s not clogged and it should have a brass rock type filter where the gas line goes into the carb. ( it’s behind the big fitting that the gas line screws into)
Car type carburators usually don’t gum up to the point where it cuts off all gas flow. The float in car type carbs usually give you too much gas, not too little.
