Having trouble replacing serpentine belt on ’01 ford escort zx2.?
So I’m trying to replace a worn serpentine belt on an ’01 ford zx2 that is chirping and squeaking, but I’m having trouble figuring out which pulley is the tensioner. I read some general instructions, and drew up my own belt diagram. From my understanding you just release pressure on the tensioner with a wrench and slip the old one off and the new one on in the same position. But like i said, I’m having alot of problem distinguishing which one is the correct tensioner.
I read (and saw pictures), of ones with a offset square nut, and also ones with a couple of lines that show the tightness, but none of the pulleys I’ve found seem to have this.
Oneis smaller has a hex nut that sticks out slightly farther, and its the most tucked away. However I put a wrench on and strong one finger pressure didn’t move it at all, so I didn’t try giving it any more.
Can anyone help?
I’m assuming the tensioner itself is fine because there is definetly plenty of tension on the belt.
The smooth rounded tensioner pulley has a 1/2 inch drive recessed ratchet drive fitting in the outer side of it. Reach down and feel it with your fingers and insert the ratchet drive into it. Look around the underside of the hood and engine bay for a small diagram showing the belt, pulleys and tensioner.
In this photo, number 1 is the tensioner pulley showing the 1/2 inch recessed square drive in the center of the pulley lever extension arm.
