best way to cut 4×4 post – already on deck?
I have a deck that has 4×4 posts that the rail set on top of.
My idea is (so I never have to paint or stain again) to slide a 4×4 pvc post over it, putting a top cap on it & then installing the 8′ panels that lowes sells – custom cut to length of course.
since the posts are in the ground (can’t take them out), I have to cut off a 1/2″ on each side of the post in place to get the pvc to slide over it.
What’s the best way to achieve this & maintain accuracy of the width left? Chain saw? sawzall?
Boy, I really don’t see how you are going to do that. I really think it will be too difficult to cut evenly from each side – free hand cutting is hard? I understand that you will be covering them up, so I don’t know how much it will matter. But did you look into bigger covers? I know my husband showed me this thing that snaps around a 4 x 4 post, but it more like a column. I would ask the people Lowe’s I am sure there is something specifically made for your needs. I am not sure how a round piece of PVC would look. They sell the new vinyl post and they would probably work.
