Set Soft Grip
Know how to repel wasps from wooden monkey bar rungs on backyard play set? They seem to eat the soft wood.
We don’t mind the wasps flying around so much as we have come to understand that it goes with having our yard border forest preserve property. But we are concerned that the kids may get stung by the wasps when they grip the monkey bars. Short of seeing if staining/sealing the wood acts as as deterrent, are there other kid-friendly ways to discourage the bugs?
I was just going to suggest coating the wood with some non-toxic type of stain or wood preservative.
They are most likely “paper” wasps, they chew the wood into a pulp and use it to build their nests.
If staining is not acceptable, you could try spraying some kind of insect repellent on the structure (first verify that it’s acceptable to apply to kids, and that it doesn’t have such a bad smell that the kids won’t want to go near it. Or maybe wipe down just the rungs if that’s where the wasps tend to steal wood fibers.
