Homework questions?
1. Why is it an advantage for a microscope to have a rotating nosepiece?
2. Why does a condensor lens make it easier to use a microscope?
1. How would you adapt your microscope to view the surface of an opaque object such as a coin or a broken metal surface?
2. A few surgeons are using scalpels with blades made from flakes of obsidian, rather than conventional stainless steel blades. Describe how you could use a microscope to show which is the sharper blade.
10 points to the first person to answer any of these questions
1. So you dont have to change out the lenses! To keep the lenses in focus relative to each other. If you had to change them out each time you went to a new magnification you would have HUGE problems seeing what you needed. They are in a series, so you can easily switch and only fine adjust a little.
2. Chages the light to render a sharper image.. .these are most useful at higher magnifications, where you can focus the light on what you are looking at, to render you specimen more visible i.e. orgamelles, flagella, etc.
3. Use the refected light source rather than the transmitted. Transmitted light has to go through a specimen, whereas reflected light will just be reflected from the surface. Also use a low power because high mags usually require transmitted light.
4. For this you would use reflected and trasmitted light! Because you are looking at an edge. You would need both to see the defintion properly. Use your 4x, then 10x, then 20x. Do you use a phase contrast microscope? If so adjust the phase so you can best see the edge. Brightfeild may work best for this though.The obsidian blade (volcanic glass) would look like a straight line. The steel blade would look like the rocky mountains.
