Gas Law Stoichiometry?
Acetylene torches are used for welding. These torches use a mixture of acetylene gas, C2H2, and oxygen gas,O2 to produce the following combustion reaction:
2C2H2(g) + 5O2(g) —-> 4CO2(g) + 2H2O(g)
1. Imagine that you have a 5.00 L gas tank and a 4.50 L gas tank. You need to fill one tank with oxygen and the other with acetylene to use in conjunction with your welding torch. If you fill the larger tank with oxygen to a pressure of 125 atm , to what pressure should you fill the acetylene tank to ensure that you run out of each gas at the same time?
The ratio of moles of the 2 reactants is 2 : 5
From this, you can say you need 2.5 (5 divided by 2) times less acetylene than oxygen.
If both tanks were the same size, you could assume that the pressure of 2.5 times less gas would be
125 atm / 2.5 = 50 atm
However, the tanks aren’t the same size. The smaller tank will increase the pressure by the ratio of the tank sizes.
Therefore the pressure in the smaller tank would be
(5l/4.5l) * 50 atm
= 55.56 atm.
